At first they were weak and their numbers were few. Encounters with beings and creatures were rare. What they lacked in strength and magic they made up for in ingenuity and resilience. As time continued, they slowly adapted to life on the planet and spread far and wide as their numbers increased. What had truly driven human progress was a long-forgotten group of daemons who had given them fire. It was the literal spark that drove human innovation even further and gave eventual rise to the first human civilizations.
As the humans grew and expanded into mythos territory, it was inevitable that their paths would cross. The mythos quickly responded to this. There were those who wished to remain apart from the humans, hidden from their gaze. There were those intent on asserting their superiority over the mortals. The beings and creatures quickly developed the ability to hide themselves from human visual perception or relocated to realms outside of the mortal world. It took a human with strong spiritual strength to be able to see them. Many of the beings used this newfound ability to retreat to more remote locations on the planet, choosing to maintain the peace and prevent the humans from finding out about them.
Others, however, did not share such “spineless” perspectives and sought to use this ability for more nefarious purposes. Throughout the course of human history, there have been many unexplained events that have come to pass. Possessions, hauntings, all manner of paranormal and unexplained events were the work of these beings while others were attributed to certain human individuals. These individuals were indeed practitioners of magic, however most humans were unable to wield such power. They certainly had potential, but there was nothing to truly spark it. This was until the first true contract was forged between a human and a member of a daemon clan. This particular daemon inhabited the body of the human, granting him untold powers which led to his rise as the leader of one of the first major human civilizations. However, this daemon, knowing of the void in man’s heart, took advantage of this and used the human to suit his needs. This eventually opened a path, allowing more daemons from the clan to possess the king’s closest men and extend his corrupt influence. This eventually led to the first war between the humans and the mythos, a war that ended in the destruction of this civilization. Throughout the course of human history, several more wars between the humans and the mythos would break out, each one ending in the defeat of the humans. However, with each defeat, the gap between the mythos and humans continued to narrow as human technology slowly evolved to counter the mythos’ magic.
In the aftermath of the last war, there was a thousand years of tenuous peace with several small pockets of conflict. The knowledge of contracts and bonds had not been lost despite many attempts at suppressing this. An increasing number of daemon clans effectively undermined their attempts and this power struggle continued throughout the ages. However, only a select number of people successfully reached out to the mythos and formed contracts with them throughout the course of human history.
Within the last two centuries, many of the mythos who maintained a policy of isolationism came to the realization that the expanding human domains would eventually overrun their own. More and more beings emerged from hiding, reaching out to the humans and forming more contracts. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that the slow integration of mythos and human societies commenced. This integration was met with heavy resistance from both mythos and human sides, believing that the other would eventually destroy them. Despite this, integration continued for the next 110 years, until the existence of the mythos became common knowledge. A mutual acknowledgement for there to be peace and understanding between the mythos and humans was reached between the leaders of both societies, which accelerated integration. They were a myth no more.
As the world is bathed in new light from this golden age, the shadows cast by it teem with threats that seek to upset this delicate balance. Where do you stand?
